Maritime Security
It is estimated that 75-85% of world cargo is transported along the vast “Shipping Super Highways.” Everyday items including food and other vital commodities will at some point in its life have been positioned on a commercial vessel. Aligned to this figure is that logistical support, provided to ongoing theatres of operation in Afghanistan & Iraq will also have at some point been “At sea”.
Each UK portal region provides a lifeline for the British economy. They are vital to sustain economic growth & stability. For example, figures provided by the Port of London Authority show that there are in excess of 36,000 commercial vessel movements per annum. A further 70,000 private leisure craft movements are also recorded, which equates to nearly 2 million visitors who will use the River Thames to gain access to the UK’s capital city.
The aims of maritime security are:
1. To target harden portal facilities from the threat of organised criminal activity.
2. To prevent, deter, and detect, any would be criminal element exploiting maritime security weaknesses.
